Norway tax rate to remain the same

NORWAY â€" The town’s tax rate will remain the same as last year, despite the town losing more than $1 million of property value surrounding North Pond, according to assessor Natalie Andrews.

For the second consecutive year, the tax rate will be set at $17.20 per $1,000 of property valuation.

Andrews said that since 2013, the rate had been going up and down “within 30 to 70 cents.”

“I think it speaks very highly of Norway as a town that it’s staying the same,” she said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had a zero adjustment. The town should be commended for it.”

Andrews said a revaluation of the land surrounding North Pond resulted in lowering the value of every parcel surrounding the pond in North Norway.

“That was a loss of over a million dollars to the town,” Andrews said. “However, the growth in town has been substantial, in terms of real estate and perso nal property, and that helped offset the decrease in value.”
